Flores Island

Wae Rebo, Flores Island Flores Island is an island located in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is one of the 17.000 islands in Indonesia with a population of over 1 million.

The name Flores came from the Portuguese word Cabo de Flores which means cape of flowers. Flores also has call Pulau Bunga. This island is a group of Nusa Tenggara Islands, together with Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.

Most population on Flores Island are farmers. Meanwhile, few numbers public servants, work in tourism, and fishermen. Flores has three main parts (West Flores, Central Flores, and East Flores).

Getting to Flores Island

Flores Island Fores Island or Pulau Flores is accessible by air, sea, and land. You can visit Flores Island from Bali, Lombok, or other main cities in Indonesia.

Flight from Bali to Flores is one of the recommended ways to get to the Island. You can take a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo, Maumere, or Ende. A flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo will take approximately 1 hour.

The bus from Lombok to Labuan Bajo will take approximately 27 hours. You will take a bus from Lombok Island and the ferry from east Lombok to Sumbawa Island. Drive a long Sumbawa Island to the Sape, a harbour where you can cross to Labuan Bajo. The ferry from Sape will take approximately 6 to 7 hours.

What to Experience on the Island?

Flores is one of the best tourism destinations in East Indonesia. The island has a wide range of tourist destinations from the west to the east. Nature, culture, and tradition are all found on the island.

  • Trek on Kelimutu volcano. This is one of the recommended destinations to visit on the island. Kelimutu has three coloured lakes. It is a perfect place to spot sunrise. Trekking on Kelimutu will take approximately 45 minutes to the top.
  • Visit Bena Vilage. A traditional house of Bajawa in central Fores. You can experience the historical and the local life in this village.
  • Lounge at Koka Beach. This is one of the beautiful white sand beaches located in the Maumere. There is also a small hill on the side of the beach where you can hike for a beautiful view.
  • Visit the waterfall and enjoy the view at Moni Village. It is not only a highlight place to visit but this is also a perfect to do before you do a Kelimutu volcano trek.
  • Enjoy a swim at So’a Hot Spring. Relaxing on natural SPA So’a hot spring is one of the recommended places to visit.
  • Visit Pantai Penggajawa or Blue Stone Beach in central Flores. Penggajawa Beach is composed almost entirely of unusual turquoise, pastel blue, and reddish stone.
  • Visit Wologai village in Ende. Experience the culture, local life, and traditions. This is one of the oldest traditional villages in Flores. The village is populated by the Ende Lio tribe.
  • Experience the history of the amazing Wae Rebo village in Manggarai, west Flores. This village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Hiking for a spectacular view of Cancar Rice Field in West Manggarai. Cancar Rice field is a spider-formed rice field which is regarding the tradition of dividing land in the Manggarai tribe.
  • Swimming in a natural pool at Goa Rangko Cave. This cave is located in the north of Labuan Bajo.
